A hard 404 returns an HTTP 404 status code. A soft 404 returns 200 OK while the page content says "not found" or shows a generic search page. Soft 404s are the more damaging of the two, because Google treats them as broken for ranking purposes while they look perfectly healthy to most checkers.
That is why a status-code-only checker gives you a false sense of safety. A list can come back 100% green and still be full of pages that Google has quietly dropped from its index.
We compare response body length, title content, and a set of signal phrases against the rest of your domain to flag soft 404s separately from hard ones. You can review the soft set on its own and decide what to fix, redirect, or noindex.
